Kerala: Engineering student attacked by his girlfriend's brother, hospitalised with serious injuries

Kochi: An engineering student was brutally hacked by his girlfriend's brother at Muvattupuzha in Kerala on Sunday evening.

The victim has been identified as S Akhil (20), who is doing an automobile engineering course at a private college in Ernakulam.

Sources say that when he was doing a plus-two course, Akhil fell in love with a girl who reciprocated his love. The girl's family opposed the affair since Akhil belonged to a different religion. Moreover, he happened to be a Dalit by caste.

Lately, the girl was apparently aware that her brother is planning to attack Akhil. So she had cautioned him not to come out of his house.

But Akhil failed to take her words seriously. He, along with ith his friend Arun (26), visited a pharmacy to buy face mask when his lover's brother came in a bike, dragged Akhil out of the shop and attacked him several times with a lethal weapon. The assailant fled the spot leaving Akhil lying in a pool of blood and Arun with minor hack injuries.

The people who happened to be on the spot rushed Akhil to a private hospital from where he was referred to Kottayam Medical College Hospital since his injuries were grievous. Arun has been admitted to Muvattupuzha general hospital.

A 17-year-old who accompanied the assailant in a bike has been detained by the police.

Further investigations are on.

The incident is reminiscent of the honour killing of 24 -year-old Kevin P Joseph who was murdered by his wife Neenu's kins in Kottayam in the year 2018. Kevin was a Dalit who later converted to Christianity.
